Sujit Choudhry: A Major Player In Constitution Building

The Centre for Constitutional Transitions is a project started by Sujit Choudhry. In turn, the organization aims to aggregate the best global experts to come up with policy options based on evidence for decision-makers. It also works towards setting agendas for them. His vast experience in preparing constitutions in ethnically separated societies has equipped him with an invaluable skill set. It is through this work that he realized the shortage of enough current research during the implementation of new constitutions.

Implementing such new laws proved to be challenging hence affecting his advisory work. And thus the organization was born. Sujit Choudhry believes that democracies can best learn from each other in terms of shortcomings and successes. This approach was inspired by his multicultural background that has seen him experience how different democracies operate. According to him understanding the point-of-view of other democracies is a key first step in assisting in their constitutional matters.

Appreciating and welcoming new ideas is the second key step in this process. Fearing change would be an obstacle towards achieving the desired goal. Willingness to try out new ideas would ultimately result in the implementation of new constitutional strategies. This would, in turn, benefit the democracy being worked on.
